Preparation

    • Wear loose fitting clothes (no elastic), Wash hair the day before, Clean/groomed fingernails and toenails.
    • Clean face w/o makeup for makeup artist to work with. Arrive on time, 15 min early.
  • Need effective, specific and repeatable communication techniques. Always communicate before making any changes, especially before touching model. Communicate model’s “left” and “right” and use hand gestures to demonstrate the turn. Very small movements of Head (chin up/down, turn left/right, tilt), think “happy thoughts” and soft smile but not big cheesy smiles, need to see eyes, and build the model up with compliments and advice.
  • Portraits - take them in tight and don’t be afraid to crop the head
  • Photographer = director. Model = actress. Communicate intent and direction then let model create and pose to match the expectations and emotion/attitude/mood/character desired. Life and energy but not ‘posed’. To Pose or Not (just direct) intro
  • Controlled poses - giving the model very specific directions and asking them to “hold the pose”. Generally only for close-ups (headshots or beauty shots). A designated post can also help build the confidence of the model too.
  • Never say “smile” unless you want a boring photo. Think happy thoughts and smile with the eyes.
  • Lips - slightly parted and relaxed, reveals a accessible, sensual look, not tense

Tips and Advice

  • Preparing for a photoshot from 1 week to hours before the shoot]].
    • 1 week prior: list of clothing styles, image concepts, props, accessories involved
    • 3 days prior: trim and condition hair, wax bikini line (allow time for irritation to disappear), plenty of sleep
    • 2 days prior: call confirm all is on schedule and details, do nails, drink plenty of water and be healthy/sleep/no alcohol
    • Day before the shoot: get plenty of sleep and relax - all is in order
  • Eye placement and expression are the most important, It's all about the eyes
    • look into the camera, make small slow movements. eyes should follow the nose closely. face slightly away from camera but keep good balance of irises. The hair should not cover the eyes or get too close. One eye may be bigger than the other so account for that.
  • Hips - shift weight on to back leg to slim
  • Double chin - learn in towards the camera
  • Look slim - face the camera at an angle, don’t look boxy toward camera
  • Shoulders back and elongate, chest and butt out short video tips of basics
  • How to Handle Hands and part 2 - keep them loose and feminine, “elegant like a ballerina”, fingers point down, pinky to camera not back of hand, for beauty get fake clear/white nails if not treated (keep some on hand) - but do not overstress the importance of the hands and compromise the expression of the face.
