chasejarvis LIVE: Allegra Wilde on youtube
Consider your photography career... where are you know, where do you want to be?
Your BRAND, be Unique/Different, when others Zig - you Zag – who are you, why unique?
“what’s in your gut, how do you articulate it?” portfolio
I am the only photographer that.... SPECIFIC MISSION STATEMENT
create SOMETHING NEW and UNIQUE - not stereotypical images
marketing – what makes it THEIR work? don’t just follow the market of everyone else
“If you look like a lot of other people, you get the job less of the time” - Allegra Wilde
“You have to take pictures that no one else in the world can take” - Chase Jarvis
it’s about you and something inside, how you feel and see the world
“you don’t have to be better, you have to be different” - CJ
“you have to be you” - AW
“I do not believe in targeting - other than those you’ve worked with already”
“when you sell something subjective, you cannot tell who’s going to like it”
“you have to promote the shit out of it” - allegra wild
“love parallel” - the photo may reveal something you can’t tell
“put yourself out there, and be yourself” - everywhere
“shoot the work you love, pimp that work, repeat” - chase jarvis
“you’ve got to have a style” - “you have to have content” what did you “freeze in time”
Portfolio Review - in print
Lost Luggage portfolio - beautiful presentation (file metal edges down)
Need NAME on your work
“what stories are important to you”?
“what do you want to say about that”?
best portfolio - self portrait of self essentially, peel off your skin and show who you are
want a personal and raw experience
front end of the book = future, romance, fall in love with person
back of the book = credibility and capability, history of success
at the end of the book, lots of thumbnails
business = had a good experience with you, good lunch, enjoy being with you!!!
dig deeper, show intensity that it takes to get that photo
shooting friends is a problem - it’s messy. shoot with actors over models!!!
ipad portfolio - possible? editors hardly ever send out printed portfolios anymore
first round review is the web - YOUR WEBSITE
maintain visual equity in either (logo, typography, design, name, style, etc)
control the order and experience of your portfolio, don’t let them cherry pick
too many photos in a portfolio? depends on how you portray it
60 photos with 6 stories of 10 photos is fine. 40 photos is doable
make first photos in port not about “selling” work to reviewer, remove pressure of sell
1 page: 40 thumbs in the back, show don’t tell, fast read - I’m a pro shooter
Dan pevils, albequerque - portfolio has many self portraits “really naked”
