was on soccer scholarship at san diego, studied philosophy, premed for a bit - became a ski bum out in CO taking action shots and met the right people, was able to sell them for $$$ and decided to make a living out of it. tired of learning about “dead old white guys” in school.
knowledge of masters: historical context of photography, transitions, styles, individuals – can be limiting as well if only reference school. be interested in a lot of things, don’t limit your knowledge though and bind yourself. use it as a spring board to decide where to go next.
biggest influece: painters in NYC 40s/50s/70s- their attitude, about where painting was “going”
able to articulate the role of art and culture and critic work - the image and it’s impact – was a powerful tool to be able to talk to art directors and sellers about it when selling photos – philosophy & art studies
read books in library, sold/licensed photos → got a 4 day commercial shoot!? unique route.
typical path: shoot for magazines, develop portfolio → sent out mailers, try to attract attention → of photo editors at magazines, get comm shoot
