Apps

Common apps that should be available to Windoze users, must have apps for security reasons. Mostly for Dad’s PC.

Net:
- Browsing: Chrome (chrome extensions) Firefox (get firefox extensions) - yubnub, delicious buttons, DownThemAll! download manager for Firefox, Flash player
- Email: Thunderbird enigmail, Sunbird (Moz calendar),
- Chat/Voip: Gaim (for all IM) + GTK, Gizmo Project VOIP client is better than skype, and for secure VOIP calls - use Zfone from PGP Phil Zimmerman,
- Utils: Putty, WinSCP, Azureus, Bittorrent, ConnectFusion (OSS dnld accelerator), FileZilla (FTP/SCP) client and server M$ Remote Desktop Client, Free Download Manager GPL‘d and with bittorrent support, Unlocker to move/rename locked files

Office: Open Office or Libre Office AbiWord portable app, (replace M$ office), M$ Office 2007 File Converter (tiny), FoxIT pdf (smaller/faster than Acrobat Reader), see the List of PDF Software - CutePDF is good but see also PDF Creator, Notepad++, Open Project for M$ Project or GanttProject (project planning)

Photo Media: IrfanView, getPaint.net (mspaint alternative), Gimp or GimPhoto, Inkscape, Batch Picture Resizer (awesome), Picasa, FastStone ImageViewer and PhotoResizer, Codecs for raw image thumbnails from Microsoft (no rotate on vista) or Fast Picture Viewer $15

Audio Media: K-lite Codec Pack Download to play all types of video, mediainfo - find out the codec/etc, Audio Grabber (CD→mp3 ripper), Audacity + Lame MP3 codec, winamp/zinf, MP3tag software, realplayer/helix, quicktime, Media Player Classic, VLC - Video Lan Client for DVD, avi, etc, MPlayer - DVD, etc player has a windows dnld, GOM Player a freeware video player, VirtualDub, SUPER video converter - does for free what you can’t even pay for, LH Convert Videos, Camstudio Portable screenshot and video recorder, VirtualDub - Free Video Dub for lossless clipping, Free Studio one package for 45 freeware tools

CD/DVD: CD Burner XP (great FREE CD/DVD burning software), DVD Shrink (shrink DVD to fit on 4.2gb DVD-R), DVD Flick (fit videos/photos on a DVD), CDR Tools (front end to cdrecord), CD-DA X-Tractor, CDR Tools Frontend, Nero 6 ultra, ISO Recorder, Deep Burner, old Burnatonce iso/bin/cue files from right click or BurnAware, MagicISO and MagicDisc $30 freeware to create, and Magic Disc or Clone Drive to mount ISO files for free (note Any+CloneDVD costs $$)
- EncVorbis, Stationripper, icecast2, dBpower AMP music converter

Misc/Utility: Java JRE, launchy, 7-zip (like winzip, does rar, bzip, tar, tgz), Notepad++, Epson Scanner suite, Multi-Function Link II software, ConsultComm (time tracker), Instant Memory Cleaner freeware & Other cool free utilities, WinDirStats hd usage visualization tool, WinMerge file and FOLDER diff/sync tool, WinMD5sum (portable), HashMyFiles awesome hash/md5sum/sha1 comparison tool
- Backup: Allway Sync free with scheduler seems to work well!, Acebackup recommended by lifehacker - as well as syncback freeware. Note: Cobian Backup and DataSafe backup utility also recommended. (old FullSync) backup sync has issues (java exceptions/no scheduler), Unison backup (no gui?), Toucan portable backup,sync,encrypt,and more utility, Synkron portable folder sync, Dsynchronize portable schedule sync dirs and FTP
- Recover/Forensics: Recuva makes undelete files in Windows easy, Sysrescd livecd with partimage, Testdisk, Zero Assumption Recover (for raid too)

Security: Keepass Pswd DB, Eraser file wipe/eraser utility, TrueCrypt (also from Portable Apps), Ad-aware, Zonealarm,
- AV/Inet: (Reviews: AV-test, AV-comparatives) AVG Free Edition antivirus, Avira free, F-Secure highly regarded
- Adaware/Inet: Adaware spyware cleaner, Spy Bot Search and Destroy (Destroy→update→immunize→scan)
